Dessert Candle care

Dessert Candle Care

Maple Beech Co dessert candles are hand-poured, whipped and decorated using natural soy wax. Because they’re built differently from ordinary jar candles, they need a little extra care while burning.

Follow these steps to enjoy a cleaner, safer and more even burn.

Before Lighting Your Candle

Always place your dessert candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface with a protective layer underneath.

Our candles are generously topped with whipped wax and decorative details. As these melt, some wax may overflow from the jar. Never place your candle directly onto furniture or another surface that could be damaged by heat or wax.

Keep your candle away from draughts, fans, open windows, children, pets and anything flammable.

The First Burn

Allow your candle to burn for around four hours the first time you light it. This gives the wax enough time to form a full melt pool and helps prevent tunnelling.

The decorative wax toppings will begin to melt into the candle during this first burn. This is completely normal and part of the dessert candle experience.

Each Burn After That

Burn your candle for no less than one hour and no more than four hours at a time.

Burning it for less than one hour may prevent the wax from melting evenly. Burning it for longer than four hours may cause the jar to become too hot and increase the chance of wax overflowing.

Trim the Wick

Before each burn, trim the cotton wick to approximately 5 mm.

A properly trimmed wick helps control the flame and reduces flickering, soot and mushrooming.

Only trim the wick once the candle has completely cooled and the wax has reset.

Decorative Toppings and Crumble

All whipped wax, drizzles, crumbles and decorative toppings are made from wax and are designed to melt as your candle burns.

If a small amount of crumble moves during delivery, gently sprinkle it back onto the top of the candle before lighting.

Never add anything else to the candle or place foreign objects into the melted wax.

Burn Time

When cared for correctly, our full-size dessert candles have an approximate burn time of 45 hours.

Burn time may vary slightly depending on the candle’s design, room conditions and how it is cared for.

When to Stop Burning

Stop using your candle when approximately 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom of the jar.

Continuing to burn the candle past this point may cause the base of the jar to become too hot.

Always Remember

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

  • Keep away from children, pets, draughts and flammable objects.

  • Always use a heat-resistant surface and protective layer.

  • Trim the wick to approximately 5 mm before every burn.

  • Burn for no less than one hour and no more than four hours at a time.

  • Never touch or move the candle while it is burning or still hot.

  • Keep the melted wax free from matches, wick trimmings and other debris.

  • Stop burning when approximately 1 cm of wax remains.

With the right care, your dessert candle can burn beautifully while filling your space with the sweet scent of somewhere you’ve already been.

Understanding Scent Throw

The strength of your candle’s fragrance can vary depending on the size of the room, airflow and personal scent perception.

Smaller, enclosed rooms generally hold fragrance more strongly, while larger or open-plan spaces may require more time for the scent to become noticeable. Draughts, fans, air conditioners and open windows can disperse the fragrance and make it seem lighter.

Fragrance is also personal; some people naturally notice certain scents more strongly than others. Your sense of smell can also be influenced by fragrance fatigue, allergies, illness and other scents already present in the room.
